Theatre for Development Consultancy, Act4Africa, February 2015 - April 2016, UK, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda
I supported the creation of new TfD and community education sessions to support a DfID funded project in Uganda. I also trained teams in Uganda and collaborated with them to devise new materials and exercises for a revised TfD handbook for the charity.
Creative English Trainer, LifeLine Community Projects, March 2014 - March 2015, National Project
Creative English is a national applied drama project that trains volunteers to deliver projects to refugees and migrants. The sessions aim to facilitate a sense of belonging and break down barriers (especially language barriers) that may isolate the participants. In particular they address areas such as health, education, housing and day-to-day life in the UK. I ran projects in Waltham Forest and Barking and Dagenham and trained volunteers to deliver the project across the UK. I created workshop plans and resources for the main programme, and also led on the research and development of two innovations. The first drew on the Creative English approach to implement a health education project through drama to Somali women. The second is a proposal to use applied drama approaches in the criminal justice system with offenders with low levels of English. I also worked with a filmmaker to create a short promotional film for the project.
Project Coordinator, Tender, August 2013 – March 2014
I was responsible for coordinating Tender's Choice and Responsibility project across secondary and primary schools in Westminster and Hammersmith and Fulham. The project used drama and arts approaches to education to explore sexual health, relationships and substance misuse. It looked at facts and statistics, as well as considered the social, emotional and personal aspects of these themes, and how to seek support or support others experiencing related issues.
My Generation Programme Manager, Only Connect, January – September 2013
I managed and developed My Generation, Only Connect's programme working across London to engage with 1825 year olds with a history of offending, or who are at risk of committing an offence. I established partnerships and fed into funding applications to help secure the programme. I was responsible for developing the identity of the programme alongside the directors of the charity. I led on writing three projects that are being delivered, or will soon be delivered, as part of My Generation, and was responsible for managing a team comprising freelance facilitators as well as exoffenders employed on the programme to aid their personal and professional development.
Teacher, Dramatic English, July 2010 – August 2011, Hong Kong
I was responsible for consulting with schools and helping to plan and develop schemes of work. Alongside the company’s aim to develop English language skills, my personal aim was to create lessons and schemes of work that allowed for pupils to engage with social issues and to provoke debate on themes such as teacherpupil power dynamics in Hong Kong, the environment, waste management and the high teen suicide rate in Hong Kong.
